Jewelry Care

I often get requests from customers to repair, clean, and replace broken pieces of jewelry.  I've learned a lot about jewelry care since I've started making jewelry.  Here are a few tips!

Jewelry Care Tips

  1. Do not wear your jewelry into a swimming pool or use around chemicals.  Humidity, cleaning supplies, and pool/spa water can quickly oxidize or discolor your jewelry, especially sterling silver.
  2. Store sterling silver jewerly in an air-tight or zip-lock bag.  This high tech method of storing your things will keep them looking like new for a long time.
  3. If you use a jewelry cleaning liquid, read the instructions carefully before using.  Some types of beads, including pearls, turquoise, and other soft stones, should never be put into any cleaning solution.
  4. Remove jewerly before going to bed.  Sleeping in your jewelry can add extra stress to chains, joints, etc. and shorten the life of your things!
  5. Keep a sterling silver polishing cloth handy for a quick wipe before wearing.  These can be purchased a most jewelry & discount stores.

Homemade Sterling Silver Tarnish Remover

Here is a cheap & easy way to clean your sterling silver jewelry:

Start with a disposable  aluminum pie pan. Add really hot water (almost boiling). Sprinkle in a couple of teaspoons of baking soda and stir.  Dip your sterling silver piece into the bath completely making sure the silver comes into contact with the aluminum pan. Rinse and dry thoroughly.  This will safely remove tarnish without harming pearls or softer stones.  For heavily tarnished pieces, you may need to repeat this process.
